VolumeCare: A New Killer App for the Treo 650

In case you haven't heard of it, VolumeCare is a small utility among the offerings from GoTreo Software. Written by Jeff Gibson, its original purpose was to automatically restore call volume settings to after your Treo 650 has a reset. It was a good idea because the Treo 650 always returns to the system default sound level after a reset. Out of the factory, including those with latest 1.28 firmware, earpiece volume of the Treo 650, even at maximum setting, has never been loud enough for me in outdoors or noisy environments. That's the main reason that I opted to use a Bluetooth headset or a wired headset much more often than I wanted to.

Starting with VolumeCare 2.16, however, author Jeff found a way to increase earpiece volume well beyond the out-of-factory 100% level. After releases later, at 2.21 VolumeCare has become my own choice of The Killer App for Treo 650. Now I don't need to use any headset just to be able to hear the other party clearly outdoors! It's a bit ironic that such a small utility from a third-party developer could make such a huge difference but there it is. PalmOne (or Palm, as it will be called since July 14) should really learn from this and give us a better smart phone out of the box. I know the Treo 650 is already the best all-around smart phone out there but at least problems like low volume shouldn't be there in the first place if a one-man third-party developer could crack it so brilliantly. My US$9 goes to Jeff but my big thumb-down goes to PalmOne aka Palm!

Get VolumeCare, register it, support Jeff. Enjoy your Treo 650 now!
